As the founder of Eye of an Immigrant, Kaur has transformed a simple storytelling campaign into a beacon of hope for countless immigrant families navigating the complex labyrinth of U.S. citizenship.
Born and raised in the cultural melting pot of New York City, Kaur's own family history is deeply intertwined with the immigrant experience. This personal connection ignited a passion for social change that would eventually lead her to the heartland of America. In 2017, Kaur made the move to Kansas City, marking the beginning of a journey that would see her emerge as a powerful advocate for immigrant rights.
"Everybody in the United States, unless you are native to these lands, has an immigrant journey somewhere in their family ancestry," Kaur reflects, her words echoing the shared history that binds the nation. It's this universal truth that drives her mission to create a more inclusive and supportive America for newcomers.
Kaur's path to founding Eye of an Immigrant was far from linear. Her initial foray into local government sparked a love for work that, in her words, "absolutely impacts people's lives on a daily basis." This experience laid the groundwork for her current mission. Now a junior at the University of Kansas, Kaur finds herself at the helm of a growing nonprofit, a role she admits she never expected to take on.
"I fell into social entrepreneurship," Kaur explains. "What started off as a storytelling campaign gained so much momentum that we had to keep it going. It was never something that I expected to happen."
Eye of an Immigrant has since evolved into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a clear and crucial mission: to fund filing fees for immigrant families and provide resources to break down the walls to citizenship. This practical approach addresses one of the most significant hurdles faced by many immigrants – the financial burden of the legal process.
Kaur's vision extends beyond mere assistance; she aims to create lasting change. "I want to see a community where when people like my parents immigrate here, they don't have to go through the same hardships. They don't have to break their backs for others to be successful," she states passionately.
Running a nonprofit has been a crash course in entrepreneurship for Kaur. "In entrepreneurship, you have to learn to do so many things by yourself, you've just got to figure it out. It's a unique journey," she shares. This hands-on experience has undoubtedly contributed to the rapid growth and success of Eye of an Immigrant.
As Eye of an Immigrant continues to grow, Kaur remains committed to her vision of a more inclusive and supportive America for immigrants. Through her work, she's not just helping individuals and families; she's contributing to the rich tapestry of American society, reminding us all that, as she puts it, "America was built by immigrants."
